Alitalia is an Italian Airline carrier that was founded in 1946, offering flights from Turin to Catania and Rome. A year later the airline made its first intercontinental flight between Milan and South America. They began operating along established European routes in the 1960's, and by the 1990's they were carrying an average of 25 million passengers a year. Alitalia was purchased by Compagnia Aerea Italiana in 2008.
