Backpage was established as an online classifieds advertising page in 2004. Since that time, it has come under repeated scrutiny for its adult services page, which has been linked to everything from prostitution to human trafficking. In fact, a petition has been signed by many public figures urging the site to take down its adult section. To date, the site has refused.
Not much to talk about here. The company justifies its keeping the adult page open by stating that if they closed it, human trafficking would just be driven underground. Well, that doesn't hold much weight, otherwise we should all be so saintly and open our own adult listing pages, you know, to catch human traffickers.
What makes Backpage's unique?
Year after year, this company seems to justify its amoral adult services page by making it sound like they are really a champion in the fight against human trafficking. It's actually kind of unbelievable.
