Banana Republic's History
The Banana Republic retail store first opened in Mill Valley, CA in 1978. It was originally founded by Mel and Patricia Ziegler but was purchased by The Gap, Inc in 1983. The store the Ziegler's originally opened carried an assortment of hand-drawn catalogues and intriguing, tourist-centered clothing and merchandise, but The Gap, Inc relaunched the store to carry mostly mainstream luxury apparel. This is what Banana Republic is mostly known for today, and to maintain that reputation, The Gap often sets up Banana Republic stores in renovated historic buildings.
