Charlotte Russe's History
Daniel Lawrence and his brothers, Frank and Larry, grew up working in their family clothing store in Brooklyn. When they were in their 20s, they formed Lawrence Merchandising Corp., and opened another clothing shop in Carlsbad, California in 1975, and named the shop after their favorite French desert Charlotte Russe. From the beginning, Charlotte Russe kept a focus on hip and trendy clothes as well as on packaging and visual displays. They received good response from women and teenage girls and opened multiple shops in San Diego over the next few years. In 1990s, the business moved beyond California and opened several stores throughout the United States. Meanwhile, the company decided to revamp its product inventory with clothes that “attract women of a certain attitude, not age.” The new stocks received immediate positive feedback from the customers. Charlotte Russe took off from there and went on to establish itself as an acclaimed clothing retail chain with more than 500 stores across the United States and Puerto Rico.
