Garnet Hill's History
Do you remember the first time you slipped between a pair of flannel bed sheets on a cold night? Well, it was a cool summer night in 1973 when Pegge Kirschner and Grant Dowse needed to unexpectantly “camp” in their car as they traveled from their camp site in Denmark (leaving all their camping gear behind) and decided to travel, by car, to England.
The sheets were a quick, last minute purchase to make their evening in the car warmer and more bearable. Sadly, they were unable to find anything similar once they arrived back in the United States.
They wanted to share this “heavenly” warmth that they found in England with their American friends and family and since they were unable to find the product in the states, they decided to start a tiny mail order business. The company was named “Garnet Hill” because the business was started in their home in the woods and there was a small hill behind their cottage.
Once word got out, orders immediately began coming in.
Garnet Hill's Values
The company began in a little New Hampshire cottage in the woods with the catalogs being assembled, stamped and addressed at the kitchen table. This humble beginning has been the foundation of the company and carried them through many successful years. They strongly believe that the people who run the company are the heart and soul of their success and it is for this reason that a relaxed work environment is encouraged.
This company never got “too big for their britches” and they never lost their passion for providing the highest quality of fibers to their customers.
Although their main mission, in the beginning, was to bring cozy bed sheets to America, today, they are known for their views, original designs, high quality and unique mixed bag and trendy selection of available products.
Social responsibility is very important to Garnet Hill and they are a member of the Social Accountability International Association.
What makes Garnet Hill unique?
More than a million dollars has been given by Garnet Hill in the form of goods, services, and monetary donations to a variety of local and nationwide charities.
Some of the charities that Garnet Hill supports include:
St. Jude’s Children Hospital. They are the leaders in pediatric treatment and research, especially children that are affected with cancer and other terminal disease. St. Jude wants to relieve some stress from families, so they cover the cost of travel, food, lodging for family members and treatment for patients. These costs are covered by the generous donations from companies like Garnet Hill.
Heifer International is an organization that is dedicated to feeding communities around the world. Garnet Hill is a proud partner of this award winning organization.
