Hanes is an American clothing company based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina selling everyday basic apparel under some of the strongest brands in the world with innerwear and activewear brands including Hanes, Playtex, Champion, Barely There, Wonderbra and Flexees. The company markets panties, bras, shapewear, mean’s undergarments, T-shirts, socks, children’s underwear and many others catering to consumers from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and a lot of other countries. Hanes was founded in 1901 with a long history of product excellence, innovation and brand recognition. As a matter of fact, over 80% of households in the U.S. have the products of the company in them making it rank #512 in the Fortune 1000 list with over $4.5 billion in sales back in 2012 and roughly around 51,500 employees in more than 25 nations. Unlike other apparel companies out there, what makes Hanes special is that most of its products are manufactured in its own facilities with more than 90% of the apparel units sold around the world and in the U.S. being manufactured in the company’s own plants.
Out of the many companies that were founded in the U.S., Hanes was the only corporation that was formed from two independent, non-competing businesses of the same family. The man behind the famous brand is Marcus Hanes who bought a land in North Carolina and moved his family south. His brothers, John Wesley Hanes and Pleasant Henderson Hanes built a tobacco company in Winston Salem through two factory fires until they were able to expand and became the largest tobacco business in the country. A serious illness of John forced the brothers to have the company sold to R.J Reynolds during the 1900s and when John got better, the Hanes brothers re-invested their profits into the textile industry as independent owners. John focused on men’s stockings and named his business Shamrock Mills while Pleasant concentrated on knitwear, two-piece underwear and men’s heavyweight and called the company P.H. Hanes Knitting. Indeed, Hanes has a pretty long history and with so many years in the business, it stands strong today with a good reputation for selling the world’s best innerwear brands.
What makes Hanes unique?
Hanes wants its relationship with its buyers to go beyond the transaction that happens online and while underwear is not the first thing that one would think of when listing his/her passions, the company feels that it can build an emotional connection with shoppers for underwear and get them talking about the brand and it’s succeeding so far. Social media is the center of its strategy, specifically Facebook where it has more than 2 million likes hitting the comfort theme over and over again. Whatever intimate apparel it is that you are thinking of buying, trust nothing else but the company with a great reputation, durability and history that consistently beat its competitors—Hanes.
