He began the business out of the basement of his brother’s apparel shop with an innovative boot, the Maine Hunting Shoe. The company continued to expand their inventory and by 1934, L.L. Bean had 13,000 square foot factory. The majority of their sales were from the catalog orders, and in 1937, their sales surpassed $1 million and today, they have over 22 retail stores throughout the United States.
