In 1921, Lucius Smith Lowe opened his first hardware store in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. The store changed hands several times, first after the death of Lucius, then from his heiress to her brother, then from brother to partner, and eventually to an executive team. By the early 1960s, Lowe's had over 20 stores and earnings of $32 million. Today, the company has 1,835 stores and annual revenue of $50.52 billion.
