Payless Shoes' History
Louis Pozez was convinced that customers prefer self-service over salesperson assistance, and decided to open a self-service retail store. In 1956, he and his cousin Shoal Pozez opened a shoe store in Topeka with the pioneering self-service approach. The first store became so popular that they opened multiple store outlets throughout Kansas, Texas, Oklahamo, and Nebraska over the next five years. In 1962, the company went public as Volume Shoe Corp and experienced steady growth over the next 17 years. In 1979, the company was acquired by the May Department Stores, which would later change the name of its shoe unit to Payless Shoes. Five years later, the May Department Stores spun off Payless, while four more store outlets of Payless were opened in the same year. In 1999, the company launched its e-commerce wing payless.com. By that time, Payless Shoes already established itself as one the leading discount footwear retailers in the United States and globally.
Payless Shoes' Values
Payless, since its inception, has been driven by its mission “to democratize fashion and design in footwear and accessories.” Over the past five decades, Payless has upgraded its product inventory, and expanded its area of operations, but the company has retained most of its original values. The company still follows the self service format, and still “seeks to compete effectively by bringing to market differentiated, trend-right merchandise before mass-market discounters and at the same time as department and specialty retailers but at a more compelling price.” Payless still prioritizes customer satisfaction, and employs only qualified, helpful employees to help the customer communicate more conveniently at every point of contact. Payless is committed to maintain its high level of customer service standards across all store outlets. The company trains its store associates on how to use the key service behaviors when interacting with customers. They are also quick to adopt new technology solutions to enhance customer experience.
