Riu Hotels' History
Founded by the Riu Family in 1953, and today the Spanish hotel chain is still run by the third generations of this family, although the company is owned by TUI.
In late 1953, Juan Riu and his wife, Maria bought an 80 bed hotel in Spain and this was the beginning of an international chain of family run hotels.
During the 1990’s, they were able to expand internationally and they opened a hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
The company was established in Mallorca, Spain and this was the site of the first building. They target families taking a holiday vacation and more than half of the establishments offer “all inclusive” deals.
Today there are over 100 RIU hotels in 19 different countries. They provide employment to more than 28,000 individuals and they proudly open their doors to more than four million guests annually.
RUI hotels are very popular in the Caribbean and they are ranked 30th in the world. According to Hotels Magazine, this company is the 29th biggest hotel chain in the entire world.
