Vermont Country Store's History
The Vermont Country Store traces its origin to 1897 when Gardner Lyman Orton opened a general store in North Calais, Vermont. In the same year, Gardner’s eldest son Vrest was born. Vrest grew up looking after his father’s store; and later in life, those childhood memories would inspire him to open The Vermont Country Store in Weston, Vermont. In 1936, Vrest married Mildred Ellen Orton; and in 1945, they took attempt to reestablish the North Calais store with a mail order catalog. The 12-pages mail order catalog became so successful that Vrest and Ellen Orton purchased a two-story building in Weston and opened The Vermont Country Store in 1946. The company’s catalog mailing list was growing at a steady pace until 1952 when Vermont Country Store was featured in the Sunday Evening Post in an article entitled “The Happy Shopkeeper of the Green Mountains.” The store received immediate attention from a national audience, resulting in a sudden growth of footfalls in the store. The company took off from there and over the years the business was expanded throughout the United States.
Vermont Country Store's Values
The Vermont Country Store is now owned and operated by Lyman Orton and his sons Gardner, Cabot, and Eliot - the 7th and 8th generation of Ortons. But the company still upholds most of its original values. The store still takes pride in being a supplier of hard-to-find items, and goes a great length in finding products that are sold anywhere else. Since its inception, the company is guided by its core values – authenticity, innovation, and commitment to its products, employees and the community. In 1995, Lyman Orton from the Vermont Country Store established the Orton Family Foundation to empower the residents of small towns to develop their communities by improving local decision making, thereby inspiring people to retain the unique social, economical, and cultural characters of each locality. The company prioritizes corporate philanthropy and maintains a commitment to supporting social welfare organizations by making donations and taking part in fundraising activities.
