8 Things That Are Cheaper to Buy in the Fall

Here are 8 items that are cheaper to buy during the fall months.
Updated October 21, 2016

Smart shoppers know how to master the art of balancing three major things: knowing what to buy, where to buy it, and what time of year to buy it.

That last part’s important, and it’s a key factor when it comes to saving serious money.

If you want to be a savvy shopper, you have to know when to buy certain items. Typically that means buying the things no one else is thinking about at the moment.

Sometimes it requires patience (for example, when you buy winter coats in the spring), and other times you can find a sweet deal on something you can use right away just by being in the right place at the right time. Either way, the savings can be tremendous.

So if it’s fall where you’re at, and you’re tired of paying full price for things other people are getting at steep discounts, you’re in luck.

Here are 8 items that are cheaper to buy during the fall months.

Airline Tickets

Planning on traveling for the holidays? CheapAir.com found that 1-4 months in advance is the “prime window” for purchasing airline tickets. Purchasing tickets early (as in September to October) is a great way to save money.

Fall months are also often considered “off-peak” time periods for most tourist attractions due to school starting, the weather starting to turn a bit cold, and holiday season not yet started. That typically means cheaper flights and smaller crowds, a win-win in my book.

Cookware

Just when the holidays season is starting to get in full swing, that’s when you should start looking around for cookware.

One source said there are traditionally nearly double the number of sales on cookware during fall months than any other time of the year. Another source also found prices on kitchen goods and appliances were at an all-time low (by a large margin) during the month of November.

Lawn and Garden Equipment

Just as the grass starts slowing down and less lawn maintenance is required, the prices of lawn equipment start dropping too.

If you’re looking to buy a mower for cheap, start looking at local hardware and home improvement stores around September - October. Mowers take up a ton of space, so stores are usually willing to drop the price a good bit to get them off their shelves and displays.

In-Season Produce

Buying in-season produce is a great way to save money and get fresh food when it’s at its peak. fall is one of the best times of the year to get fresh produce, and the USDA lists more foods as “in-season” in fall than any other season.

Apples, cranberries, pomegranate, squash, pumpkins, cabbage, and broccoli are a few worth mentioning, but there are tons more.

Jeans

With back-to-school sales ending, retailers are typically looking for ways to get rid of excess inventory quickly. Being that clothing (particularly jeans) tends to be one of the main items for the back-to-school rush, start looking for deals on leftover jeans during the months of September and October.

Electronics

Black Friday is known for being the biggest day of the year for most retailers, and electronics tend to be the main attractions for Black Friday ads.

But for certain items, you may not necessarily have to wait until Black Friday to start getting deals. For example, Reader’s Digest suggests purchasing a new TV around September as that’s when new models come out and the previous models’ prices drop.

Appliances

Just like with electronics, appliances also tend to get marked way down around Black Friday. According to one source, Black Friday week typically sees a significant increase in “best of the year” prices over every other time of the year.

Also, most major appliances roll out their new models around September and October, so it’s a great time to get a deal on last year’s models.

Wedding Dresses

New wedding dresses are usually released in the winter months, so smart brides-to-be should start looking for a dress during the fall months, while bridal shops are trying to clear out old inventory for newer lines. Plus colder months tend to be slow for the wedding industry, so you’re more likely to find bridal shops willing to offer discounts.
