When we saw the words "free books and music" on Lifehacker today, we knew we had to go check it out. BitTorrent, notorious to most as a haven for software and entertainment piracy, is attempting to head off that criticism with offerings for free or "pay-what-you-want" material directly from the artists or writers themselves.

So what can you get?

  • You can get part one of the book The 4 Hour Chef by Tim Ferriss, which guides you in learning to become a really good cook. As part of the bundle, you'll also be able to access behind-the-scenes videos and photos, early drafts, notes, interviews, and exclusive recipes. If you want the rest of the book, you'll have to buy it on Amazon.com.
  • If you've never watched EpicMealTime, you're in for a calorie-dense treat. Their bundle includes an exclusive video, recipe, song, and a premiere music track from artist Tyler Lemco.
  • With the Kumare bundle, you'll get the official movie trailer, the first 10 minutes of the film, behind-the-scenes photos, and more.

Are the BitTorrent bundles a good deal? We would say that you should know what you're getting. You will not be getting full albums, movies, or books for free. What you will be getting are snippets of the main work, and exclusive freebies such as photos or recipes or music tracks that aren't available elsewhere. You'll need a BitTorrent client to open up the files, which are free for the most part.
