We can all agree that obstacle races are awesome, and a great way to stay in shape: but it can be a costly endeavor, whether it's preparation, equipment, or registration. With that in mind, we've gathered together a couple helpful tips to help runners save on the mud-covered, sweat-infused races across the country.

Take Advantage of Early & Late Registration

Registration for obstacle course races can run anywhere from $35-$200, depending on the event. There are two approaches to saving on the cost of registration: the easiest is signing up as early as possible. Often, organizers will give a large discount for people who finish a race, then sign up for next year's – or by watching their respective websites for registration dates.

Often, registration prices will creep up slowly as the race draws near. For those who like to live on the edge a little, signing up for a race days or a week before (if there are still spots available) usually comes with a reduced price, as organizations look to fill every available slot in a event.

Go Social And Save Everywhere

As with most companies, Facebook proves to be a useful tool in saving money on registration and equipment. Shoe companies like Nike and Reebok are always posting coupons on their site, and other sites like Groupon and Living Social are known to post coupons for discounted registrations. But “social” doesn't just mean “social network”: if you're planning to run a race with friends, registering as a team usually saves everyone a few valuable dollars.

Take Advantage of Coupon Codes

From shoe and clothing companies to accessory sites, we've got a huge complement of promo codes and coupons perfect for obstacle racing enthusiasts. Check out the latest coupons on our bluepromocode.com page, follow our blog, sign up for our email alerts, and bookmark your favorite race page: with new coupons arriving every day, our up-to-date database puts a wealth of saving at your fingertips.

Volunteer

The last option is one that requires a few hours dedicated to a good cause: by volunteering at the set-up, organization, or takedown of events, most organizers will thank volunteers by giving them a discount on registering for the race itself. To signup to volunteer, just head to any event's home page (like the Tough Mudder and Run For Your Lives sites) and fill out the registration form.
