It struck BreAnna when she moved to Chicago last year with her husband that she needed to start a blog focused on her passion of how to eat healthy while remaining frugal. CraftyCoin.com has grown steadily over the past few months and now has a robust selection of quality content related to recipes and budget grocery shopping techniques.
BreAnna took some time out of her busy schedule recently to share with us why she’s so devoted to healthy eating on a budget.
Check out the Q&A:
Q: How long have you been carefully budgeting your food?A: I’ve been strictly budgeting my groceries since August 2013, but have been eating whole, unprocessed foods on a budget since January 2014.
Q: What advice would you give to shoppers who want to eat healthier, but are turned off by the price?A: Keep it simple! For me, I focus on fresh vegetables, fruit, and meat to create inexpensive, delicious meals. When you start buying specialty products or the latest “superfoods”, the bill starts rising. Don’t overcomplicate your grocery list. Just buy simple, whole ingredients.
Q: How long have you had your blog?A: I’ve been blogging since October 2014.
Q: What prompted you to get started with blogging?A: I really have a passion for saving money! I wanted to prove that eating healthy doesn’t have to be expensive like everyone claims. Plus, I think my husband was getting a little tired of hearing me talk about how much money I saved us every week on groceries. Now I have a place to share with others who are just as excited as I am about eating real food on a real budget!
Q: What do you most like about frugal shopping for healthy food?A: The challenge! Each week when I go grocery shopping it’s like a game. I have a $70 weekly grocery budget and it’s fun for me to see if I can spend less than this!
Q: What is the hardest thing about living a frugal healthy lifestyle?A: The dishes! Living a frugal healthy lifestyle means I prep and cook nearly all of my own meals and snacks each day. That means there are a lot of dishes to clean! Luckily I have a husband who is more than willing to help with clean up.
Q: Where do you see the future of couponing going in terms of healthy food?A: Rebate apps like Ibotta have started to add more and more options to get money back on fresh produce, not just on name-brand products. I love this! I’m hoping that the future of couponing will involve more rewards for buying fresh food rather than the majority being on processed products.
