We are proud members of the couponing blog community. There are so many great ones out there and we’re committed to spotlighting a few of them via our Couponing Interview Series.
The format is a simple Q&A with the site creators and their responses provide excellent insight into the couponing world.
This installment features Jason from Jasoncouponking.com. Jason’s site includes plenty of coupon updates, but he also dispenses coupon advice and has unique sections dedicated to topics like coupon humor and coupon myths. His “Pay-It-Forward” initiative is also worth a look and explores the concept of couponing for charity.
Here is the complete Q&A:
Q: How long have you been couponing?
A: 4 Years.
Q: Why did you start couponing?
A: Like many people I was searching for ways to stretch my money as many of my expenses continued to grow. As my family grew (I have a 5 and 8 year old) I needed to learn to become a more educated consumer and my coupon journey began.
Q: How long have you had your blog?
A: 2 years.
Q: What prompted you to get started with blogging?
A: I started the blog as part of a Pay-It-Forward program. At the time I was offering free coupon classes within my community and found that I would spend a great deal of time answering the same questions over and over. I decided to start a blog to give others a resource to use to become more educated about coupons.
Q: What do you like most about couponing?
A: Saving money! I like having extra money each week to dedicate to my family and the feeling of having better ‘control’ over my finances.
Q: Where is your favorite place to shop with coupons?
A: Price Chopper because they double coupons under $1 and their employees are very coupon friendly.
Q: What advice would you give to couponing newbies?
A: Start slow…
Lots of people watch too much Extreme Couponing on TV and don’t get that it is just a reality show – not real life. They start using coupons expecting to save hundreds each week right away and when that doesn’t happen they get discouraged and quit. People need to give themselves time to learn how to effectively use coupons – just because you have a coupon doesn’t mean it always makes sense to use it. Have patience – the savings will come.
Q: What is the biggest challenge couponers face?
A: Getting overwhelmed with all the available information and/or coupons and not giving themselves enough time to learn the system. It can also be time consuming at first so this presents a challenge to many families who are already pressed for time.
Q: Where do you see the future of couponing going?
A: I see coupons moving more into a digital format via smartphone technology. Target is already doing a great job with their Cartwheel and Mobile coupon offerings. The days of relying on the Sunday paper for your coupons is long gone.
