Want to save even more on your Walmart purchases? From basics to insider pro-tips, we investigated  how experts dig up legit promo codes and markdowns for instant discounts on their cart totals. Walmart often offers promo codes for a variety of items, from groceries, to electronics, to clothing, to home goods, but can a smart shopper always make sure they always get the best price?

One of the most frustrating things about coupon codes is they can be hard to find—and so many don’t work. So, here, we’re providing some tips and tricks for finding working codes for Walmart:

1. Know where to start: Web, app, and email

First, cover your bases on the more obvious places to get coupons. Walmart often lists its promo codes on its website and within its app. Bookmark Walmart’s home page, download the Walmart app, and sign up for Walmart's email list to receive notifications about sales and discounts.

2. Use a coupon browser extension to do your heavy lifting

There are numerous websites that list coupon codes for Walmart. We’d recommend the relatively new SimplyCodes that shows you promo codes that are submitted and verified in the real-time by real people (and have far more working codes than those spam sites as a result). If you download the coupon extension, the codes automatically pop up at checkout—no Googling necessary.

3. Stay updated by following Walmart on social media

Walmart sometimes announces promo codes on its social media accounts—so check Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for the latest to save.

4. Double check the codes

There are a few reasons a Walmart promo code might not work.

  • It has expired. Walmart promo codes typically have expiration dates. Be sure to check the expiration date on the promo code before you try to use it.

  • It isn’t valid for the items you’re purchasing. Some promo codes are only valid for certain items or categories of items. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of the promo code carefully to make sure that it’s valid for the items you are purchasing.

  • You have already used the promo code. This one’s a bummer and it happens all the time. Walmart promo codes can typically only be used once. If you’ve already used the promo code, it won’t work again.

5. Coupon not working? Try this.

If you have a non-working Walmart promo code, there are a few things you can do.

  • Check the expiration date and terms and conditions. Make sure that the promo code is still valid and that it is valid for the items you are purchasing.

  • Try using the promo code again. It sounds obvious, but it’s something people often forget to do. The fact is, sometimes, promo codes just don't work the first time they are entered. Try entering the promo code again to see if it works.

  • Contact Walmart customer service. If you’re still having trouble using your promo code, contact Walmart customer service for help.

6. Insider tip: Price scan everything

Frugal expert and power couponer Kimmie Brogan shared with us that that Walmart doesn’t send their clearance to other stores and handles its own clearance items versus third-party vendors, like other retailers do. “That makes it harder to spot their items because they don’t always pull them from the shelf,” she says. To that end, Brogan says to make sure you price scan everything. “I randomly scanned my $120 luggage set last year and it came up for $20 for a 3 piece set,” she says. “You just never know! Always scan!”

7. Walmart’s open secret: Wait four weeks

There is usually always a date on the price tag at Walmart, Kimmie says, and that date indicates the last time this item was marked down. “Typically they stay at that price point for about four weeks, then it gets marked down further,” she adds.

8. Collect Walmart Bucks (trust us here)

Walmart now offers Walmart Bucks back for certain grocery items you buy—these can be used on later transactions to save even more money, Brogan says.

9. App it up! Save on-the-go.

Using any store’s app will save you so much money, Brogan says. “It’s worth it to download it if you shop there a lot,” she says.

Will in-store coupons work online?

The short answer is yes, most Walmart in-store coupons will work online. The long answer is there are a few exceptions. For example, coupons for specific items or categories of items may not be valid online. You can check the terms and conditions of the coupon to find out if your coupon is valid online.

Extra tip: Use Walmart+ Assist to maximize savings

You have to qualify for this one, but if you do, you can save big. Walmart+ is a membership program offering a number of benefits, including free shipping on orders over $35, discounts on fuel, and early access to sales.

Now here’s the extra savings tip: qualifying government assistance recipients—SNAP, WIC, Medicaid and more can always snag a Walmart+ membership for $6.57  a month or $49 a year. It’s a service that helps Walmart+ members save money on their shopping. Walmart+ Assist personal shoppers can help you find the best deals on the items you need, create shopping lists, and even check out for you. To use Walmart+ Assist, simply open the Walmart app and tap the "Assist" tab or sign up here
