So what happens when you combine a love for DIY projects, gardening and baking with chemistry and math degrees? The incredibly informative and highly engaging Chemistry Cachet blog, that’s what! Alexis is the founder of this awesome site and she might just be one of the coolest scientists you will ever come across.
Alexis manages to make chemistry seem so much more interesting and practical than your high school teacher could have ever imagined by weaving it seamlessly into her posts about cooking, gardening and crafting. That she is able to maintain Chemistry Cachet while also working full-time as an academic consultant is further testament to her unique array of skills.
Learn how she balances all of her diverse interests in the following Q&A:
Q: What are your favorite topics to blog about??
A: Experiences, baking, painting, gardening, my bulldog, coffee.
Q: How long have you had your blog?
A: Chemistry Cachet was officially launched earlier this year, although it was being curated for many months prior.
Q: What’s the most interesting reader interaction you’ve ever had?
A: I had a reader contact me saying they were basically at rock bottom after being diagnosed with a severe health issue. They felt like their life was practically over, but she stumbled upon my blog one day and read my article about living with with a health problem. She said she was so inspired by it, it changed her attitude 100%. She is now an avid reader and she said I helped her turn her life around. It filled me with so much joy!
Q: What prompted you to get started with blogging?
A: A mixture of many elements. I wanted to share with others some awesome information I have learned along the way. While getting my degree in chemistry, I studied in the ins and outs of chocolate. I also studied horticulture! My friends were always asking me questions and commenting that I should start a blog … so I decided that is exactly what I would do! I also talk about nutrition and health tips with some fitness dabbled in. I suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis (since age 10!), so I love sharing my knowledge and tips to help others deal with it and stay as healthy as possible.
Q: What do you like most about blogging?
A: Helping others and interacting with people.
Q: What advice would you give to an aspiring blogger?
A: Just be yourself. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up trying to do things like other successful bloggers, but each blogger is unique. What worked for them probably won’t work for you.
Q: Which post have you had the most fun writing?
A: Oh, there are so many! I loved sharing an article containing my research information about chocolate nutrition.
And I had a blast sharing my DIY cold brew coffee recipe.
Pretty much any post that showcases how chemistry is involved in everything we love like chocolate and coffee is fun to write!
Q: What is the biggest challenge to being a blogger?
A: Being noticed. There are so many amazingly talented bloggers out there and it is easy to get lost in the shuffle.
Q: Who are some of your blogging inspirations?
A: I have so many! I was a blog reader for many years before starting my own. The first blog I started reading was actually The Pioneer Woman’s blog and Apartment Therapy, then it just went from there :)
Q: Final Thoughts
A: Although professionally I am a writer, editor and academic consultant (website: Academic Services), blogging is definitely my favorite job. I am excited to continuing growing and gaining new readers who love it as much as I do. Sharing my experiences and helping others is really the best job there is!
