Avoid The Outlet Stores

We generally love a good bargain anywhere, but we cannot recommend the outlet stores of the Gap, Inc brands. Much (but not all) of the goods you’ll find these outlet shops are manufactured specifically for the outlets themselves, and are often of a lesser and cheaper quality. You may not be saving much, either, so you’re better off just shopping the clearance racks at a main retail store.

If you're at an outlet store, you can tell whether a piece of clothing has been manufactured for the retail store or the outlet by checking the tag. If it’s a factory outlet item, there will be three small squares underneath the brand name.

Be Realistic About The Quality Of Clothing You’ll Get

Old Navy’s clothes are cheap, and for good reason. They are not intended to last very long, which can make them perfect for little ones who outgrow clothes faster than weeds, or for trendy clothing items you only want to wear a few times. The shoes and bags aren’t really worth getting, unless you’re okay with disposable flip flops, which can often be had for $1. Gap originally made its name on its denim, so if you’re looking for jeans that fit and are priced well, that’s what you should focus on. Banana Republic’s clothing looks great and is of better material, and as such, is also priced higher than Gap and Old Navy goods.

Head To The Back For Clearance Items

At every Gap, Inc. store, there’s a section in the back that’s specifically for sale items. Do all or most of your shopping there. Familiarize yourself with the clearance codes. If the item price ends in a 9, most likely it will be discounted further. If the item price ends in a 7, it’s the lowest price, so you better snap it up before someone else gets it.

Familiarize Yourself With Shipping, Return & Price Adjustment Policies

If an item you buy goes on sale the next day, you can call the store for a one-time price adjustment within fourteen days of your original purchase. Often, price adjustments will not be available for items purchased with a promo code or coupon, but they are available if you purchased it with a rewards card, or with free shipping. To get a price adjustment, call or email the relevant store and explain your situation calmly and politely for the best results. See below for links to the stores' price adjustment policies:

Old Navy, Gap, and Banana Republic offer free every day shipping on all orders over $50. If you want your goods in faster than 7-9 days, then be prepared to cough up some cash. Often, the stores run free shipping promos, so a good strategy is to wait until there’s a free shipping code available, and combine it with another promo code.

Old Navy, Gap, and Banana Republic all offer free returns. You can return the item to the appropriate retail store, or print out a preprinted shipping label that will be reimbursed once the item is received. If you bought items from different stores online, such as a pair of pants from Old Navy, and a dress from Gap, you can package it in the same box and ship it back.

Save Your Receipts

The receipts often have survey codes for you to fill out within a few days of purchase. Once you've completed the online survey, you'll receive a 20% off voucher or coupon (10% off for Old Navy). Fill out surveys for Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic. Note: coupon is good on regular-priced items only.

Stack Promo Codes

Promo codes can be stacked on your purchases at Gap, Inc, stores, though there will be exceptions. Oftentimes, promo codes do not work on final sale or clearance items. The most effective combination is a percent off coupon with a dollar off discount.

Make Friends With Someone Who Works At A Gap, Inc. store

If you’re lucky, you can ask them to share their Friends & Family discount with you. There’s also a bi-annual Friends & Family sale, during which you can garner extra savings on your purchases.

Get The Store Credit Card

Store credit cards can be a mixed bag. We cannot, in good conscience, recommend them for everyone, but if you’re a Gap, Inc. devotee, then the store card is definitely worth it for the deals and the perks.

You can get a GapCard or a Gap Visa Card, and get an immediate 15% off once you get approved. You’ll get a $10 rewards gift card for every $200 you spend, or 5 points for every $1 spent. For the Gap Visa Card, you’ll earn 1 point for every $1 you spend outside of Gap.

You can redeem the rewards gift card at any Gap, Inc store or site. If you opt for paperless statements, you’ll get an additional 500 rewards points. You can earn up to 2000 rewards points just for signing up for Gap emails and voice message updates.

You’ll get access to exclusive offers, promotions, sales, and events, and special birthday savings. Every Tuesday you can save 10% off your purchases at Gap, Old Navy and Piperlime, although there are some restrictions.

If you spend $800 a year at Gap, Inc, stores, you’ll be automatically upgraded to Gap Silver, which comes with a few more perks, including free shipping on online purchases, free basic alterations at Banana Republic, and a 15% off Choose Your Own Sale Day voucher. You’ll also get access to special Silver-only offers and events such as Triple Points Days.

The Old Navy Card similar to the Gap Card. You can apply for an Old Navy Card, or an Old Navy Visa Card, and you get the same amount of points and perks. Howver, there’s no Silver Level as there is with the Gap Card.

The Banana Republic Card is also similar to the Gap Card. You can apply for a Banana Republic store card, or a Banana Republic Visa Card, and the rewards amounts are the same - $10 rewards for every $200 spent. The Banana Republic card has a Luxe tier which is similar to the Gap card’s Silver tier - you need to spend $800 a year to gain access to free alterations at Banana Republic and Luxe specific sales and events.
