First Impressions count not just for visitors to your home but also for yourselves.

For perfect curb appeal your home’s landscaping doesn’t have to be anything fancy or overly done. Nothing that takes hours to maintain. Just simple details that add character and charm.

I really love homes that have a welcoming exterior. I like small pops of color here and there to add to the overall curb appeal of a home, but what I think adds the most curb appeal to a home is greenery.

Plants that are placed intentionally but do not look like they were done purposely. I love planters full of plants of all different shades of green. I love hanging baskets that are overflowing and ground cover that has different textures and colors.

When it comes to adding to my home’s curb appeal I keep a few things in mind when choosing plantings. First, I look for ways to stretch my dollar … what plants are going to give me the most for my money? Second, I am definitely no gardener! My idea of upkeep is turning the sprinkler on. I need easy-care and inepxensive plantings just in case I forget to water them – not that I would do that (OK, maybe I might).

This leads me to Ferns. Most ferns do well in part shade, but there are many which do well with full sun, provided they get enough water.

Ferns can be divided easily and used in hanging baskets and planters.

Ferns come in many sizes, shapes, colors and textures. Their versatility make them perfect for many different applications in your landscape.

There are many varieties of ferns. The three that seem to do the best in different zones are Foxtail, Lady Ferns and Boston Ferns. Many of these Ferns are available at big box stores like Lowes, Home Depot and even Walmart. You can also find them online at Amazon.com or PlantsExpress.com, among others.

According to Lowes, Foxtail Ferns have feathery foliage, well drained soil works best for them. They are great for hanging baskets and are perfect for shady areas.

Lady Fern plants are reliable, easy to grow in a moist, partially shaded location. They have a bright green lacy foilage. Ideal for beds and borders.

Boston Ferns have bright green foliage and per Lowes, they are easy to grow and maintain. They are great for hanging baskets and make great patio accent plants.

To stretch your landscape dollar use ferns to add height and texture to your landscape.
