It’s a dilemma so many modern college graduates are forced to face. They’ve accomplished so much already in getting their degree, but then they realize that was the easy part. Now they are saddled with significant debt and limited income with which to pay it back. This can be debilitating if not addressed, but a smart approach can help solve the problem.

Jason Butler found himself in the aforementioned situation and has dedicated himself to fixing his loan issues and achieving financial freedom. He decided to take his journey even a step further, however. He founded The Butler Journal blog to chronicle his quest and assist others in their efforts to overcome the challenges of paying back college loans and credit card debt.

Butler was generous enough with his time to spend a few minutes with us recently and share his inspiring tale of becoming a successful personal finance blogger.

Q: What are your favorite topics to blog about??

A: My favorite topics to blog about are travel, debt, side hustles and college information.

Q: How long have you had your blog?

A: I’ve had my blog for 2.5 years.

Q: What’s the most interesting reader interaction you’ve ever had?

A: The most interesting reader interaction that I’ve had was via Twitter. A tweet from a random young lady told me to keep blogging and that she enjoys what I write.

Q: What prompted you to get started with blogging?

A: I saw other people with debt blogs and making moves, so I figured I can do it as well. I wanted to tell my story and educate people from my mistakes.

Q: What do you like most about blogging?

A: I like the fact that you can be yourself 100% no holds barred. You can blog about anything that you want to.

Q: What advice would you give to an aspiring blogger?

A: Before they pay for the domain name and hosting they should make sure that it’s something they really want to do. I’ve seen so many people start strong with their blog only to disappear within 4-5 months.

Q: Which post have you had the most fun writing?

A: The post that I had the most fun writing was the recap of my cross-country trip. I took two weeks out of my life in 2013 and drove coast to coast via interstate 10. I wrote a 4-part post talking about my trip.

Q: What is the biggest challenge to being a blogger?

A: For me the biggest challenge of being a blogger is writing. Some days I just don’t feel like it. I get writers block every once in a while. The good thing is that I usually write 1-2 posts every Saturday and Sunday so I’m ahead.

Q: Who are some of your blogging inspirations?

A: Some of my blogging inspirations are Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income, Darren Rowse from Problogger and Michelle from Making Sense of Cents.

Q: Final Thoughts

A: I’m currently in the process of paying off over $72,000 worth of debt. Follow my journey via Twitter @Butler_Journal
