After we published The Insider’s Guide To Mastering Target’s Sales, Clearances, And Deals, we came across even more awesome savings opportunities at Target. Recently, Target has launched several initiatives to combat “showrooming” - the act of people going into the stores, comparing prices on their smartphones, and then opting to go somewhere else such as Amazon.com for their purchase. What this means is that you now have even more ways to save money at Target, if you just know where to look.

  • Sign up for Cartwheel. Cartwheel is a Target-specific app (available on Android and iOS, and you can use Facebook to log in), that will net you additional savings of five to thirty percent on up to fifteen items at a time. The best part is that you can stack these savings with the Target Red Card (extra 5% on your entire purchase), manufacturer coupons, and Target-branded coupons and catalinas. Check Target’s coupon policy for more information. If you bring in your own cloth bags, you get an additional $0.05 discount for each cloth bag. Cartwheel is great to use on Target’s generic brands, such as Up & Up, Simply Balanced, and Archer Farms, which are already priced lower than brand names. You can use Cartwheel savings up to six times per day at a Target store. To use Cartwheel, show the barcode on your phone to the Target cashier, or you can print it out on paper to bring with you to the store.
  • If you are a new parent, check out Target Subscriptions, which just launched in September. Target Subscriptions allows you to subscribe to frequently used baby items such as diapers, formula, and wipes for a slight discount, and free shipping when you spend $50. If you have a Target Red Card, you can save an additional 5% and get free shipping without any price minimums.
  • Target Ticket is currently in beta. Target Ticket is new competitor in the increasingly crowded digital movie rental space. Movies and TV shows rented or purchased on Target Ticket can be viewed on any of your mobile devices, including the Roku, and does not require a subscription to use. If you are an infrequent Netflix or Hulu Plus subscriber, this might be a great alternative for you. When you purchase a DVD that has the UltraViolet logo on it, you’ll get a code to get your own digital copy of the movie to keep for yourself. Currently, if you create a free account, you can download up to ten free movies to keep for yourself. (Caveat: the ten movies are limited to thirty movies you can choose from, and most of them are not the latest hits.) Check out $1 rentals or the sale section for the best bargains. Use your Target Red Card for an extra 5% off.
  • Trade in your old electronics for a Target gift card. Target accepts over twenty thousand electronic items for trade-in. You can go to the store and get a quote, or look online to get a quote for your item. If you decide to trade it in, you will get a Target gift card equal to the value of your item.
