If you are thinking of taking a trip this year, you can save quite a bit of money by planning early.

Here are some tips to consider before you get those bags packed:

When to Travel

The costs of travel vary by the time of year. Peak seasons are usually summer for US destinations, but if you can visit on non-peak times, you can score yourself a really good deal. While it is chilly in December in most of the US, places like Hawaii typically have good weather that time of year and you can take advantage of off-season hotel and flight rates.

Traveling on the weekends is more expensive than midweek. If you are flexible on dates and time, you will find lower airfare rates available. Study the flight schedules to get the best value possible.

Lodging

Check the travel sites out there. There are so many now and many websites will cross check with other travel websites. Check out the reviews for the area you are planning on visiting and have an
idea of the the going rate.

If you have a large family or group, consider renting a home or condo. If you travel often, you are most likely part of a hotel or airline rewards program. If not, you should sign up for them. Many of these programs are partners, so even if you do not reach an award level status with one, points may be transferred to another program partner which can make you eligible for a freebie or upgrade. Check with each program on this possibility.

Dining

Find out where the locals eat. Ask the people you meet in the hotel and shops where they recommend. Most locals are not eating at the trendier and more expensive restaurants, but at smaller, family-run businesses, which are usually quite economical. Pick up local literature and newspapers for coupons and deals. Check out the eateries’ social media pages and see if they have any specials going on and plan accordingly. Also, many lodging facilities include a breakfast, if you are not sure if yours does, ask.

Check out the local markets and pick up some staples for your room. Fruit, bread and cheese purchased from a store can go a long way to stretch your food dollar. If the water is safe where you are visiting, bring a refillable water bottle instead of buying bottled water. If you must try the new restaurant, split the meal with a travel partner to save costs, or go at lunch time, when the items are cheaper.

Museums

Many museums have a day of the week (or month) where admission is free or reduced. Take some time to research and schedule your days accordingly. Sightseeing – Checking out the buildings, gardens and shopping areas is free! Plan to explore some areas and take in the sights and sounds of the locale. If you need transportation, look at public transportation options that are available in most major cities.

It is amazing how much you can save with a little planning. I have saved thousands of dollars over the years using these methods. With all the extra money you save, you may find yourself able to take more trips! Happy Traveling!
