BluePromoCode.com’s New Study On Shopper Buying Habits for this Halloween
Halloween is almost here! 44% of people plan to dress up for Halloween this year spending nearly 2.6 billion on costumes. So we ran a survey to see exactly how and when people were planning to do their Halloween shopping this year. We surveyed 100 young adults aged 18-34 from around the country in a randomized study and this is what we found.
Key findings:
- 26% plan to purchase their costumes online
- 49% use promo codes when purchasing costumes online
- 57% stated their decision to purchase a costume was effected by the availability of a retailer’s coupon code
- The most important factors when buying a costume online were overall price (85%) and free shipping offers (71%)
- Uniqueness of the costume was most important factor for buying a costume (42%)
Where do people purchase your costumes?
Our survey shows that people typically start out by searching on google for costume ideas and initial prices. Ultimately, about 26% will purchase them from an online store like Spirit Halloween, Amazon, or Costumes4Less and 74% will buy from a store like Kohl's.

How much do people spend?
We saw a big trend when it comes to spending habits. On average, people are planning to spend about $38 for costumes and $27 on decorations. However, a strong 40% said they planned to use a coupon when buying online and 57% the majority said the availability of a coupon code would affect their buying decision. This once again reinforces the buying behavior trend of consumers today, especially with young adults.

When do they buy?
Not surprisingly, most people wait until the last minute. Our study showed that 59% waited until the final week to make their costume purchase.

Most important factors when buying a costume
“Uniqueness & Originality” was the most popular response at 42%, followed by price and affordability at 36%. Fabric quality was only a factor for 10% of people, but surprising when it was listed as the biggest complaint (see next section). When shopping online, overall price (85%) and free shipping (71%) were the most important factors.

Biggest complaints?
The top complaint complaint from consumers when buying a costume was the low quality of materials and that they were too expensive. For online shoppers, 15% reported that the items they bought looked different in person than on the website.

Survey Methodology
In September 2013, Zipfworks commissioned a study to analyze consumer trends and shopping behavior for young adults. Zipfworks surveyed 100 U.S.-based young adults aged 18-34 for a study with SurveyMonkey. Questions were randomized and related to their specific spending and shopping habits for Halloween. Participants were provided non-cash incentives for their participation.
