BluePromoCode.com’s New Study On Shopper Buying Habits for Video Game Consoles

This November the two leading game companies are launching their new game consoles – the Xbox One and the Playstation4. Millions will be spent on advertising and promotions for these high-end computers and each one expects to sell 3 million units before of the year. So we surveyed adults aged 18-34 from around the country to see which consoles are more popular and how consumers can find great deals.

Key findings include:

  • Consumers are 40% more interested in buying the Playstation4 than the Xbox One
  • 82% feel the Xbox One is too expensive at the $499 starting price point
  • Selection of games (30%) and affordability (29%) are the most important features when shopping for a gaming system
  • 72% look for online coupons before buying a game system
  • Of those that shop online, 42% believe the price will be cheaper than from a retail store

How much do they cost?

When the PS3 launched in 2006, it was priced at $499 and $599 and consumers balked. The Xbox One is priced similarly, at $499; will consumers react the same 8 years later? According to our survey, a resounding ‘yes’ as 82% fell it’s priced too high. But, to help off-set the cost, 28% said they would buy it online because they felt it was cheaper than from a retail store. Overall, a heavy 72% said they would look for coupons online before making any purchase decision.
