7 Things You Should Never Pay Full Price For

Here are 7 things it rarely ever, under almost any circumstance, makes sense to pay full price for.

We live in a beautiful era for shopping. With the explosion of the internet over the last couple of decades or so, there’s now more competition than ever before, which leaves businesses to compete for your business.

And how do they compete? By offering specials, promos, and discounts to grab our attention. And when businesses compete, it’s a win-win for shoppers.

That’s probably nothing new to you, but most people still haven’t come to fully realize the saving potential for savvy shoppers.

The truth is, these days you can get almost anything for less than full retail price. You just have to know where to look.

So if you’ve been paying full price for - well, almost anything - it’s time to wake up and smell the savings. Here are 7 things you should never, under almost any circumstance, pay full price for.

Tickets

There might have been a time when paying full price for tickets to events and movies was reasonable, but not anymore. In fact, nowadays it’s not about just trying to get tickets for less than full price, but more about seeing just how cheap you can find tickets.

With sites like StubHub, SeatGeek, and ScoreBig, you’d have to almost go out of your way to pay full price for tickets to games and events. And if you really want to get bold, you can check Craigslist and likely find even more outrageous deals.

Gift Cards

Most people buy gift cards at least once a year, if not several times. Christmas and birthdays come around at the same time every year, so why keep waiting until the last minute to run down to the local drugstore to buy a gift card at full price?

Instead, save some money by purchasing your gift cards from sites like Gift Card Granny and Raise. These sites buy gift cards from people who don’t want or need them, and then they turn around and sell them at a discount. As long as sites like these are around, there’s no real reason to pay full price for gift cards.

Anything at Target

This is almost cheating, but it’s worthy of being mentioned here. Technically, anyone can get 5% off everything at Target by using their Target RedCard.

The cool thing is, you don’t even have to have a good credit score. With their debit RedCard, you can use it without worrying about being denied for bad credit, and you can shop without the temptation of going into debt.

In addition to the 5% you’ll save instantly with the RedCard, there are other tricks like couponing, price matching, and using their Cartwheel app that will help you save even more money at Target, making it downright insensible to pay full price.

Books

There are a bajillion places to buy used and cheap books online, so you usually don’t have to look far to beat the prices of your local bookstore (nothing against Barnes and Noble).

Probably the most reputable place to buy cheap books online is Amazon. Even though they’re a gigantic online retailer now, they started out as an online bookstore and they’re still the number one place most people shop for books today.

Whether you’re looking for a used paperback or hardcover, and audiobook, or an eBook, Amazon’s prices, shipping, and customer service are tough to beat.

Hotels

I think you would have to intentionally pay full price for a hotel room these days. You’ll sure have to dodge enough ads and offers from hotel deal sites offering the lowest price along the way.

Between sites like Expedia, Hotwire, Kayak, Orbitz, Hotels.com, and many others, there’s plenty of competition in the “travel and hotel booking” industry to make sure you never pay full price for another hotel. Just Google “cheap hotels” and watch the offers start rolling in.

Clothes

This is a tough one to admit, but if we’re being completely honest with ourselves, we would acknowledge the fact that we really can’t justify paying full price for new clothes.

Places like Plato’s Closet sell used brand name clothes (or “gently used” as they call it), and they only accept high quality merchandise, so no one would ever know you didn’t buy your clothes new.

6pm is another place to look for cheap brand name clothes. It’s like an online version of an outlet store where you can find good clothes for a decent percentage off MSRP. You can even check Dealspotr for 6pm coupons to save even more money.

Groceries

Okay, I admit, it’s tough to never pay full price for groceries. There are plenty of people who do it, but the average person probably doesn’t have the patience or the time to become an extreme couponer. But you can, and should, save significant amounts of money every time you go to the grocery store.

Between store coupons and manufacturer coupons, grocery stores are some of the easiest places to save your hard-earned money.

Here’s how to stop paying full price for groceries at Publix and Walmart.
